Work currently underway on Cluster I in Speyer: pile driving of conductor pipes

Speyer, 07. August 2026
BaseErdölförderung Römerberg/Speyer

At the Cluster I site on Siemensstraße in Speyer, the consortium partners Palatina GeoCon and Neptune Energy are currently carrying out conductor pipe work. As part of the expansion of the production facilities, three so-called conductor pipes are being driven in the ground.
The work will continue this week up to and including 8 August and will resume next Monday. The work is expected to be completed on Tuesday, 18 August. No work will take place on Sundays.

During the pile-driving operations required for this work, significant noise is to be expected at times. It takes around 45 minutes to install each pipe segment. As a rule, two pipe segments can be installed per day, meaning that the noisy work takes place in two separate periods of around 45 minutes each. The work will take place during the day between 7.00 am and 7.00 pm and has been assessed and approved in accordance with mining regulations.
“We are aware that the work will involve noise at times. We would like to thank local residents for their understanding whilst these necessary measures are being carried out,” says Horst Prei, Head of Production in Speyer.

The new cellar with the conductor pipes is intended to prepare for further drilling activities in the coming years. The driving of the conductor pipes is therefore not part of the regular work carried out in Speyer. The last comparable work on Clusterplatz I took place in 2014.

What is a conductor pipe

The conductor pipe is the first section of pipe in a subsequent well and is one of the most important safety features in well construction. It is driven approximately 50 metres into the ground. Only once the conductor is in place can the actual well chamber be constructed around it.
