Environment, safety & health

In the extractive industry, which often operates under challenging conditions, protecting the health and safety of all employees, contractors and local communities is a top priority. We also act as environmentally friendly as possible in our activities. For us, this is the most important aspect of our corporate culture and a key driver of sustainable success.

We want to contribute to the energy transition - by saving energy today and changing in the future. We are experts in our field, whether we are technicians, engineers, geologists or planners. And together we are ready for change.

"We want to ensure that all employees return home healthy after every shift - no matter where they work."

Henning Gröschke
Head of Health, Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality at Neptune Energy

Always prioritise safety!

Preventive measures, quality controls and continuous improvement processes are important success factors for us. We work with an occupational health and safety management system comprising processes, guidelines and procedural instructions that are in accordance with international standards. This includes, for example, risk identification and assessment in all our decisions. All employees and contractors must have the same qualifications and are committed to common goals for safety, health and environmental protection. We liaise closely with the supervisory authorities in all our work.

Focus on the environment

Depending on the location and scope of a measure, external experts prepare comprehensive studies and action plans for nature conservation - whether landscape conservation plans with species protection assessments, ecological construction monitoring or large-scale environmental impact studies. We are legally obliged to carry out many of these measures in Germany. For example, many construction works are not possible during the breeding and settling season for birds. However, we are also involved in activities that go beyond environmental legislation. Together with the German Oil and Gas Industry Association (BVEG), we have set up systems such as seismic monitoring in the past and implemented long-term air measurements in Lower Saxony in order to reliably rule out risks. We will continue to work on minimising our impact on the environment in the future. Where necessary, we provide compensation and replacement measures for nature conservation.

Safety starts in the mind!

We believe that HSE should not just be a collection of regulations, but a conviction. That's why we raise awareness among our employees every day - whether through our internal safety programme "See what's going on", regular safety briefings or visits to all central field stations by our management team. In this way, we show that safety, health and environmental protection affect all colleagues equally. All employees and contractors receive regular training.

Measures such as health care and prevention programmes also ensure the well-being of our employees.

We work on the basis of the following health, safety, environmental and quality guidelines:

By setting ourselves demanding annual work programmes, we aim to improve continuously in this area and work in the best possible way.

"We are committed to the Paris Climate Agreement and are not pursuing our path of transformation alone, but as part of a changing Europe."

Dr Andreas Scheck
Managing Director Neptune Energy

Transformation for our climate targets

Europe is committed to achieving climate neutrality through various policy measures and legislative initiatives aimed at accelerating the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy. We are part of this changing Europe. Our team is also guided by the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the EU taxonomy. In this context, our commitment is to minimise our emissions by 2045. At the same time, however, we also want to be a reliable local supplier of energy and raw materials during the transition period.

We have already been taking responsibility for years through various measures - for example, our facilities are now running on electricity. At the same time we are purchasing such electricity almost exclusively from renewable energy with proof of origin. This enables us to save around 11,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, corresponding to more than 15 per cent of all our company's emissions.

Our energy management system is certified in accordance with the DIN EN ISO 50001 standard. Here too, the aim is to continuously minimise our energy demand in the long term. We have assessed the energy efficiency of all our production sites. A team from various departments has conglomerated to deal with energy issues. They regularly discuss and examine internal figures and data. Once a year, accredited certifiers monitor the energy management of our sites.

Among other things, we work on the basis of our energy efficiency guidelines.

Commitment to Paris climate targets

But we want to go even further. That's why we are changing. Our roadmap is set:

Innovative solutions for the future (Boost), environmentally friendly extraction of traditional raw materials (Base) as long as we still need them in Germany. We are also decommissioning and returning as much land as possible to nature (Balance).

In order to align our transformation with the Paris climate targets, we are developing Germany-wide targets and action plans for all our activities as part of a transition plan. In 2026, we will publish a comprehensive, externally audited sustainability report detailing our progress.
