Neptune Energy is investing in a regional production centre
Meppen. It’s a rare sight: an 18-metre-high workshop with a railway siding. Construction work on this building complex is set to begin on the Neptune Energy site on Hauptstraße in Meppen. The site is home to the raw materials company’s regional production centre. Around 190 employees currently work here.
The new workshop, representing an investment of more than two million euros, will in future be used by both the regional oil and gas production operation and the team responsible for plugging and abandonment work. The so-called workover operation has up to six active, company-owned winches in use for work on the well. In order to be able to transport the equipment to the oil drilling sites in the marshy Rühlermoor, a number of locomotives operate on a light railway network alongside lorries. A key feature of the future workshop is that these wellhead winches will be able to be driven into the approximately 1,000-square-metre steel hall with their masts raised and on rails. In addition, around ten employees and trainees will carry out maintenance on all types of machinery and equipment here.
“We do almost everything ourselves on our own facilities. That’s because repairs and maintenance work on our machinery require specialised experts. Our own mechanics have the most experience in this area,” reports Stefan Steininger, Head of Workover Operations, adding: “In future, the team will also be able to work on large rigs sheltered from the wind and weather. That’s a huge advantage.”
From an ergonomic point of view, the new building also brings a number of improvements: a pit for working safely beneath the rigs, as well as an integrated crane. The two-storey building will not only consist of workshop spaces for production and winch operations. Plans also include a separate electronics workshop, offices, a storeroom for plant components and a staff room.
The construction work is being carried out by local companies: Exeler (construction and project management), Mayrose from Lingen, Krämer-Bau from Wietmarschen and J+B Küpers from Osterwald. The project is due to be completed in just over a year, by which time the first track winch will be able to roll into the workshop.
