“In the Altmark region, we are developing one of the world’s largest lithium deposits from brine – thereby combining industrial transformation, regional value creation and environmental responsibility. Our aim is to make an active contribution to Europe’s security of supply and resilience, whilst keeping the impact on the environment and nature as low as possible.
At the heart of our approach is Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE), which we use to extract lithium from deep, natural brine. This innovative process not only offers a clear locational advantage, but also significant environmental benefits compared with conventional methods such as large-scale evaporation ponds or open-cast mining. In particular, we avoid high land consumption and significantly reduce water and energy usage.
Once gas production ceases, we will use only brine from a depth of around 3,500 metres in the Altmark region. In doing so, we are opening a new chapter for the region and actively shaping the transition from fossil fuels to a raw material of the future.
Some of the existing infrastructure can continue to be utilised; investment remains within the region, and existing jobs are secured in the long term and set to be expanded in the future. The combination of long-standing technical expertise, existing facilities and innovative technology makes this project a genuine structural transformation initiative – supported by the region and aimed at ensuring a sustainable supply of raw materials for the future.”
