"We no longer need storage capacities of this size. The two remaining tanks will be sufficient in future. Crude oil from the region is mainly processed directly in the refinery and not stored temporarily," reports Michael Funke, responsible for production in Emsland and Grafschaft Bentheim at Neptune Energy, adding: "It is now our responsibility to clean up and dismantle infrastructure in the tank farm that is no longer used."
The first preparatory work for the demolition of the two tanks will start next week. Specialist companies will first decommission the facilities and open the tanks to clean them. This process will continue until around mid-June. "These work steps correspond to the regular preparations for demolition or inspection work. We ask our neighbours for their understanding for these measures," explains Funke.
For cleaning work, gases have to be burnt at times using a mobile flare. An independent expert accompanies these activities with emission protection measurements. Odours may also develop in the short term during the cleaning work. This is to be minimised by pre-cleaning inside the still sealed tanks. Special robots are being used for this.
However, it will be several months before experts can completely demolish the empty and clean tanks. All work will be carried out in coordination with the responsible authorisation authority, the trade supervisory office in Osnabrück.
