New well in the Römerberg-Speyer oil field
Investment in regional supply

23. Oktober 2025

Speyer, October 2025 - The consortium consisting of Palatina GeoCon and Neptune Energy is continuing its successful collaboration in the Römerberg-Speyer oil field. In mid-October, the consortium will drill the next oil well - Römerberg 10 - at Clusterplatz II on Franz-Kirrmeier-Straße. With the eleventh well in total, the partners are once again investing a double-digit million euro amount in the future of the site, thus making an important contribution to the secure supply of domestic raw materials.

"In Speyer, we produce an important raw material for everyday life every day - safely and responsibly," emphasises Jürgen Siewerth, authorised signatory at Palatina GeoCon, adding: "But a new well is always something special."

Start of the eleventh well on cluster site II

The new well will be drilled on Cluster Site II to the north-east, where six wells are already located. Drilling operations on site are running around the clock - seven days a week. "We have operating personnel on site at all times to supervise the work," explains Armin Wicker, Head of Operations at Neptune Energy.
The drilling rig was supplied by DrillTec GUT GmbH Großbohr- und Umwelttechnik, which has already worked in Speyer on several occasions. The rig is expected to be in operation at the existing central field station for around three months. It will then be connected to the processing facilities - after which the well can go into regular operation.

Römerberg 10: Development of the Speyer oil field continues

The Römerberg 10 well marks another milestone in the development of the oil field, which extends at a depth of around 2,000 to 2,500 metres below Speyer and has been continuously and safely developed since 2008.
"The new well is important for us not only because of further knowledge about the reservoir, but also in terms of stabilising our production rates," says Wicker.

As existing wells produce less oil over time, new wells are crucial for the long-term perspective. The last well was drilled in 2022. Since then, the consortium has invested in maintenance work on the existing wells, among other things.

Modernisation of the infrastructure

The consortium is currently planning to expand the above-ground facilities at both central field stations. No additional space is required for this - instead, more efficient systems for processing crude oil will be used. New oil tanks with a larger capacity will also be installed in the future.

Work under official supervision

The Römerberg 10 well is part of a long-term strategy for the sustainable utilisation of regional resources. All work is carried out to the highest environmental standards and is supervised by the Rhineland-Palatinate State Office for Geology and Mining.
