Start of production for new wells in Georgsdorf in sight

Georgsdorf, 19. November 2025

The approximately 50 metre high drilling rig south of Heideweg in Georgsdorf has recently disappeared from view. Over the past nine months, the raw materials company Neptune Energy, with its local production centre in Meppen, has drilled two new natural gas wells on site. The Adorf Z19 and Adorf Z20 are each over 4,000 metres long.

"Despite some technical challenges, we are very satisfied with the result," reports Michael Funke, responsible for production in the region at Neptune Energy." The upcoming test work on the Adorf Z20 well will provide further insights into the natural gas quality, expected pressures and quantities. The team is currently setting up a smaller facility on site for this purpose. This work was already carried out on the Adorf Z19 in the summer.

During test work, the extracted gas cannot be fed into the processing plant, but must be burnt on site using a flare system. "Unfortunately, flare work cannot be avoided for safety reasons during maintenance and repair work or when testing a new well," says Funke, adding: "We ask for your understanding for the resulting light and noise emissions."

The natural gas is cleaned using a pre-filter before it is properly burnt using the flare system. The team on site tries to minimise the cone of light, especially in the evening and at night. However, due to technical procedures and processes, this will not always be possible. "We are in regular dialogue with the immediate neighbourhood," adds Funke.

The responsible experts will complete the test work as quickly as possible - probably after around four weeks. Neptune Energy plans to put the Adorf Z19 and Adorf Z20 wells into regular operation in the winter of 2025/2026. If successful, both wells could contribute to supplying around 300,000 households in the region with domestic natural gas from the Adorf Karbon field in the future. All work is under the supervision of the State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology (LBEG).
